DARE offers two arts internships for University of Leeds students during each academic year. Abby Swain joined Opera North in November 2021 as projects intern, working closely with Projects Manager Kathryn Gasic to help take apart the elements of opera (words, music, visual arts and performance) and put them back together in new and unexpected ways.
As projects intern, Abby will learn about contracting artists, booking artist accommodation and travel, programme development and management, and event management. Abby has already worked on a wide range of projects:
“A particular highlight was setting up the Christmas trees and decorating them for the Winter Wonderland concert, and then being able to see the work come together and watch the concert itself.”
Our interns also get the chance to develop skills and experience in arts administration, looking at data and inputting it into spreadsheets at the same time as learning about the various aspects of project management that contribute to the hosting of a successful event.
“As projects intern, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the time I’ve spent with Opera North so far; I’ve been able to assist at some really exciting events and see some incredible musicians perform while doing so. I’m really looking forward to the rest of my internship – getting to learn more and getting involved with more exciting events!”
Our DARE interns typically join us for a maximum of 20 days over the academic year and receive a bursary of £1,500, paid in six monthly instalments. DARE internships are open to University of Leeds students only. Keep checking back for updates on our next internship.
