During my time at Opera North, I played a key administrative role in leading and coordinating a
mentorship scheme in collaboration with the Royal Northern College of Music. As the main point
of contact, I ensured the smooth communication and organisation of the scheme, which gave a
select group of students valuable and insight into life within the Opera North Chorus.
This role equipped me with essential administration skills, including drafting professional emails,
organising and distributing rehearsal schedules, and anticipating potential clashes and logistical
challenges. Balancing this alongside my final year of university pushed me to manage my time
effectively, prioritise my workload, and gave me an incredible insight into working behind the
scenes at a leading Arts organisation.

About Us | Opera North

Beyond admin tasks, I was actively present at every session, maintaining a confident and
approachable attitude. I built meaningful relationships with the mentees. I enjoyed watching them grow
throughout the six-month period, responding to feedback and improving from their initial auditions.
The perks were incredible! I was lucky enough to see every show across the season. The highlight,
of course, was joining the tour in Manchester and seeing La Rondine at the Lowry. It was also
rewarding to observe the evolution of shows, particularly the Cavalleria Rusticana/Aleko double
bill, from piano rehearsals to opening night.

Another highlight was being invited to the DARE annual meeting in May, where I had the privilege
of leading the university student voice. This experience confirmed the importance and value of the
internship. It also allowed me to brush up on my networking skills, leading to an invitation to the
Leeds Cultural Institute’s annual celebration, an amazing evening that felt like the perfect way to
end both my time at Opera North and Leeds University.

I felt the effects of the internship immediately, and I was able to directly transfer skills and
experience into other aspects of my university life. In November, I co-produced a newly written
play, overseeing auditions and organising a successful fundraiser. I also led the sponsorship and
fundraising initiatives for a large Leeds performing society, networking and building rapport with
local businesses and charities. My time at Opera North even inspired me to take an Arts
Management module, where I focused on the company’s sustainable practices during their Green
Season, something I’d seen first hand.

I’m excited for my next chapter, as I move to Melbourne, Australia for a year, eager to build on
these skills and dive into the Australian Arts scene.

A huge thank you to everyone at Opera North, especially Becky Smith and Howard Croft, for their
immense guidance and support!
